What’s going to happen when the star-crossed lovers finally reunite?
Okay, she might have thought Jamie was dead, but still, when Outlander’s Claire went back to her 1940s life, leaving him to deal with the Battle of Culloden in ye olden days, it did seem a bit harsh. But fear not—as we’ve seen in the Outlander season three trailer, our favorite time-traveling couple will finally be reunited after 20 years on Starz come September. Sounds like the most romantic moment ever, doesn’t it?
But, according to Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire, reality might get in the way of the mushy lovefest we’re expecting. “I think maybe the obvious way of doing the reunion would be violins playing, and angels singing, and a sun shaft coming through the window,” she told ELLE.com at Starz’s TCA party in Los Angeles. “I hope that what we’ve done is try and ground it as much in realism as we can. I think it’s really awkward, and funny, and sweet, and endearing.”
It’s only natural that after 20 years apart, a lot has happened to the two as they’ve lived separate lives. Claire and Jamie have a daughter he’s never seen, Claire’s become a doctor, and there’s major drama with her husband Frank. So, just a few small issues then.
“I think Claire and Jamie have both had each other on pedestals for 20 years,” Balfe said. “So when you finally see the object of your love and desire again in the flesh, it throws out everything you thought you would do.” Their separation doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that a quick catch-up over coffee would adequately cover, but luckily it sounds like the pair’s off-the-charts chemistry will win the day. “I think they’re not quite sure what to do with their bodies or their words,” she said. Sounds like things will get pretty steamy, then.
But will the couple stay together for good this time? “I think that physically and emotionally, even though we don’t show this part of the journey ever, of her passing through time, I think it takes an awful lot from someone,” Balfe said of Claire’s time-traveling. Still, given just how difficult her travel through the stones is, she’s not going to undertake it lightly: “I think each time is quite dangerous. You’re never sure if you’re going to land in the right time, or any of those things. I would have to imagine, and I don’t know, because I have not read past book four, but I would have to imagine that once she finds Jamie again, she’s not going to let him out of her sights for too long.”
It also helps that Balfe doesn’t hate playing opposite the gorgeous Sam Heughan as Jamie. “I feel very fortunate that I have a partner like him to work with, it’s all good,” she said. Then she gave us a cheeky smile and added, “He’s a god, let’s be honest. He’s as good in real life as he is on TV.”
A god? Good, we’re on the same page then.
I’ve added photos of Caitriona at the Summer TCA Press Event. Check back for more. Thanks to my friend Mary for a few of these. Enjoy!
It’s not quite the same as seeing the entire premiere episode at Comic-Con, but Starz has released new video from Outlander that shows key moments from the first few episodes of season 3.
In the video dubbed “Parallel Lives,” Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) and Caitriona Balfe (Claire Randall Fraser) provide narration as scenes of from the Culloden battle and Claire’s new life in 20th century Boston flash on the screen. Frank (Tobias Menzies) makes an appearance, as well as Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Lord John Grey (David Berry), Joe Abernathy (Wil Johnson), Jamie’s sister Jenny (Laura Donnelly), and Fergus (Romann Berrux).
On July 21, Starz premiered the entire first episode of season 3 after the show’s panel discussion at Comic-Con. You can read about it here.
Outlander premieres on Sept. 10 on Starz.
I will be adding all the videos and photos of Caitriona from San Diego Comic Con in this post throughout the weekend so it’s all in one location. If you are interested in seeing Sam’s coverage from San Diego Comic Con, visit Sam-Heughan.com. I do want to say thanks to Alikat, Claudia, and FFA for a few of the photos.

I’ve added a bunch of missing Outlander images to the gallery from season that I have had saved on my computer and been waiting to find time to add them to the site. I will work on adding the missing season 2 and season 3 images tomorrow. I’ve also added recent magazine scans of Caitriona.
Tomorrow Caitriona will be at SDCC (San Diego Comic Con) with Sam Heughan and other Outlander cast members. I will add photos from the event tomorrow. Enjoy!
“A. Malcolm, Printer and Bookseller.” Has there ever been a sweeter sight, Sassenachs, than the sign hanging outside an Edinburgh print shop in Outlander‘s just-released Season 3 trailer? Och, we think no. Let’s all gaze upon it for a wee second, shall we?
If you’re someone who hasn’t read Diana Gabaldon’s novels and you don’t know why this is a big deal, no worries! Skip down to where we tell you it’s safe, because there are big spoilers ahead.
Spoiler alert! If you have read the books, you know that the Carfax Close shop is the site of Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) reunion after a 20-year (by way of 200 years) absence. And while we don’t see Mr. Malcolm himself in the footage, everything else in the lead-up is there. Claire’s expectant/worried face! The sign! The bell! You can all but smell the ink and the alepot inside. Such sweet torment, no? (And if you missed the scene in the trailer, make sure to go back and watch the video all the way to the end. They’re sneaky, those Starz folks.)
OK IT’S SAFE NOW, non-book-readers. The trailer also features several other scenes based on events in Gabaldon’s Voyager. As previously announced, the drama will examine how Jamie and Claire’s lives changed drastically during the years between her return to her own time and the events of the Season 2 finale. So that means we see lots of Frank in times both happy (cuddling a baby Brianna) and strained (that shot of Claire fuming while he slinks upstairs looked rough), as well as footage of Jamie being arrested upon his return to Lallbroch and his subsequent adventures with Lord John Grey, played by new cast member David Berry.
We also witness Brianna and Roger helping Claire in her search (as well as smooching a bit), as well as Jamie making significant eye contact with a woman who is not his mo nighean donn. Two decades is a long time, people!
Outlander returns Sunday, Sept. 10, at 8/7c.
We have more pictures for you, Outlander nation!
In preparation for Outlander‘s much-anticipated presence at San Diego Comic-Con next Friday, we have obtained some exclusive first looks from season 3.
And look who it is! Lord John Grey and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan)!
We also have a photo of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and her 20th-century hubby, Frank (Tobias Menzies), gazing lovingly at a young Brianna.
So let’s recap: Expect a tale of two centuries when Outlander makes its much-anticipated, gawd-it’s-been-forever return to Starz in September. While Jamie (develops an unexpected rapport with his British captor John Grey (David Berry) after the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Claire has returned to 20th-century Boston to resume her marriage to Frank and raise young Brianna, her feisty daughter fathered by Jamie.
But now for the bad news: It’s going to be several episodes before we see the time-traveling nurse reunite with her hunky Highlander. When the lovebirds finally do hook up in a Scottish print shop — a scene fans of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling novels have been breathlessly awaiting — come prepared with a cold compress.
“For Sam and I and all the writers, we felt that it was so important to make sure we had the tone right,” Balfe tells EW. “Claire’s had time to prepare herself for what this might be and to play various scenarios through her mind. But for Jamie, this person just landed in his life again and there was no warning. So you’ve got two people trying to figure out how to go about this.”
Outlander returns Sept. 10 on Starz.
I’ve added photos of the new Outlander posters and art work and screencaps from the new promo of Sam and Caitriona. It gave me goosebumps! I’ve also added some Unsorted stills from the new season and behind the scenes images. I plan to add a lot of missing images to the gallery prior to San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) so keep checking back! I have a folder full of Outlander images to sort through and add to the site. Enjoy.
Get the inside info about the new episodes. Plus, an exclusive video of a very anguished Jamie and Claire.
Finally, the Outlander news you’ve been waiting for: We’re thrilled to announce that Season 3 of the STARZ time-travel romance will return Sunday, September 10. Yes, that’s right—you can now mark the end of Droughtlander in your calendar.
Thirteen new episodes devoted to Claire and Jamie will air this fall, and they’ll be based on Voyager, the third of Diana Gabaldon’s eight Outlander books.
Here’s the official season three poster, showing Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) on opposite sides of the standing stone—and in totally different centuries. Claire’s in the 1960s, having returned to her original life, and husband Frank (Tobias Menzies), while Jamie’s in the 1700s. No, you’re crying.
And here’s an exclusive live-action version of the poster, featuring a very anguished Claire and Jamie:

“You can come back to your life,” Claire muses in voiceover, “but it’s never the same. Maybe it’s enough to have gone once. How many people can say they had that?”
As for what we can expect, the new season will pick up right after Claire returns to her old life, pregnant with Jamie’s child. As for Jamie, we’ll see him at the historic battle of Culloden, fighting not only Black Jack Randall but his grief at losing Claire. The battle itself will be epic, showrunner Ronald D. Moore told ELLE.com: “I’m very excited about finally delivering Culloden to the audience after having talked about this pivotal event for so long.”
Moore also says the two are building their lives again independently: “We’re going to reset the story and the characters at the start of the season, giving the audience a window into what happened to Jamie at the battle of Culloden, as well as what happened to Claire in the twentieth century.”
What should fans be most excited about, according to Moore? “Getting to see the ways in which Jamie and Claire grew and changed over the course of their 20-year separation is a very exciting prospect.” And with Scotland, Cape Town, and even an ocean voyage to the New World (which Moore calls “a big turning point in the saga”) on the horizon, the very setting of this epic romance will change.
Of course, a reunion is definitely on the cards for our favorite time-defying lovers, though it might take a while. The only question is whether they’ll still feel the same way after so long apart. But true love never dies, right?
