Caitriona Interview with Otago Daily Times
Written by admin on April 26 2016
OTAGO DAILY TIMES – Matt Suddain sits down with Caitriona Balfe, star of epic swords and man-skirts drama Outlander.
This show has a simple concept, really: a married former World War 2 battlefield nurse, Claire Randall, discovers an ancient stone circle and accidentally travels through time, where she becomes embroiled in the Jacobean wars and meets her love-match: a kilted young warrior called Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).
OK, so the concept doesn’t sound that simple. But the idea is simple.
To transport the audience – mostly women – out of their everyday lives and into an alternate world of fantasy, adventure and generous amounts of sex.
When I met Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire, in a posh hotel in central London, I asked her if she had any idea why these fantasies about escaping to another time are so popular, and why time travel is such a go-to idea for film and TV.
‘‘Well, I suppose because we have so little control over events in our life. I think people love to fantasise about the ability to go back and do things differently. I’m more of the theory that no matter what has happened, everything brings you to the place you are right now, and so you’ve learned something, or you’ve grown from it.”
I can’t help pointing out that every time travel show or movie has things turning out incredibly badly.
‘‘Exactly! Because things turn out the way they’re supposed to.”

Caitriona & Sam Play InStyle Agony Aunts

INSTYLE – It’s the Scotland-based, historical romance that has us hooked. For those of you not familiar with it (although, seriously where have you been?) Outlander, is the television adaption (you’ll find it on Amazon Prime) of Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling series of novels that is filmed on location in Scotland and stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. The plot sounds a little ridiculous at first but is well worth sticking with – nurse Claire Randall (played by Balfe) finds herself transported from 1945 to 1743 where she falls in love with highland warrior Jamie Fraser (played by Heughan) while at the same time is being pursued by her present day husband’s ancestor “Black” Jack Randall (played by Tobias Menzie) Think sword fights, horse chases plus plenty of sex and of course, sweeping shots of the gorgeous Scottish highlands.
Naturally, the drama throws up a lot of moral dilemnas and questions. Adding to this in real life is the fact that many fans are convinced that Heughan’s and Balfe’s chemistry isn’t just limited to the screen. Although, both actors have denied any romantic involvement with eachother explaining they are just good friends. So considering, that the duo are so good at helping eachother cope with their on-screen drama we thought it would be fun to see how good they are at dishing out advice on some scenarios that might sound slightly familiar to their characters. From dating someone younger, to being torn between two lovers, watch the video below to see their suggestions on what to do. And as for the chemistry between them IRL, we’ll let you be the judge of that.
